Shonaleigh’s Diary

Shonaleigh in Croatia 2019
May 24 – May 27 all-day

2.STORYing is a three day international festival promoting contemporary storytelling, open communication of cultures and dialogues. It offers new festival content with new types of interaction, challenges and dynamics.

The theme of this year’s festival is Heritage. Our guest performers will promote language and cultural heritage by sharing stories from Indian, Jewish and Italian history.

Shonaleigh, from Great Britain, is probably the last carrier of the Drut’syla, ancient storytelling skill from the Jewish tradition.

Having learned the Drut’syla tradition from the age of four, once she heard her aged Jewish grandmother tell a tale that can make you believe there’s still magic, there was no going back. Storytelling is in her blood, she lived and breathed tales during her childhood because this is a skill that in Jewish culture never died. And she is still continuing with the tradition.

Her repertoire consists of 12 interlinked cycles, each of them with hundreds of tales! And interestingly enough, Shonaleigh keeps all the stories in her head! None of them are written on paper.

She is a passionate advocate for the development of storytelling as a cultural and educational tool and an award winner for her great contribution to culture.

As one of Europe’s leading storytellers, she continues to perform at festivals and events around the world. Wherever she goes she carries with her thousands of oral stories from the Jewish tradition and shares their magic.
